Did you set your New Year Resolutions yet?
If I need to make a bet, I am sure one of your new year’s resolutions will be: Get a new job, get a job (if you are unemployed), find your purpose, get a promotion… Am I right?
These are the end of the process, but as we talked before, to get from A (when I am now) to B(where I want to be), we need to set small steps (milestones).
When we set resolutions, we should put the smaller steps to get to those big end goals. Because if not, we end up not accomplishing them.
If one of your goals for 2022 is one, I stated above. You should set the kind of resolutions below:
Instead of – Get a new job:
1) Network more – This is important to make contacts that can get you that new job.
2) Timeline, a plan and strategy – You need to set a plan and put an end date to every step of the plan to track the progress or see if you need to change or adjust it.
3) Learn a new skill – A recent course in your CV always will look great. You do not need to invest much money, but learning something related to that new job or a transferable skill will be nice.
4) Volunteer in something related to the new job – You could start gaining experience for that new role, volunteering in something related to it.
5) Create a good work-life balance – Is that new job a way to get more balance between your work and personal life. Start to make small changes that can help it.
Instead of – Get a job:
1) Align your values with your career – Make sure that your job is aligned with your core values to make the right choice.
2) Network more – Networking is vital; let’s set a goal to make three new contacts a month.
3) Undertake further training – consider improving your skills, taking updated courses, and making your CV stand out.
4) Say yes to scary opportunities – It’s always good and a way to grow to get out of your comfort zone, don’t lose the chance to do it if you have it, just because it scares you.
5)Be more Productive – Start to do less but more meaningful and impactful things. Sometimes when looking for a job, we start to send a bunch of CV’s, but we are not sending them to the right places or with the right words. Less CV’s in the right places is the way to go.
Instead of – Find my purpose:
1) Discover my values – Your values are your compass in the right direction. It should be the first step.
2) Work on my mission/vision – Where do you want to be in 5 years (vision), and how do you want to do it (mission) can lead you to discover your purpose.
3) Volunteer in projects I like – Trial always will be an excellent option to discover what we want. Volunteer and try to get answers.
4) Take one hour a day to work on me – Inner-work is a must! The only way out is through. We cannot discover our purpose if we do not know ourselves.
5) Talk with people who have already found their purpose – Mirroring and getting help from others who already did what I want to do.
Instead of – getting a promotion/ pay-rise:
1) Have a conversation with my manager – Going to the source that can help me achieve my goal.
2) Demonstrate what I can bring to the new role – Sitting and waiting for someone to offer us the pay-rise position; it’s non-realistic. Work hard to show why this promotion/pay-rise should be yours.
3) Learn a new skill for the new role – Learn or improve something that can show your commitment to that new position.
4)Prepare a proposal – Prepare a statement/proposal (including achievements and examples) to present at the right time; about why this promotion should be yours.
5)Learn how to negotiate – Negotiating is a skill, and you should be ready to kill it when the times come.
When we do not set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based), we set ourselves to failure instantly.
All of us tend to go from point A directly to point B, everything needs a process, and that process needs to be planned, and we need to work for it.
One of my favourites quotes is the one below that represents everything:
” Dreams do not work unless you do.” ~ Ben Francia ~
It does not matter if it’s the end of the beginning of the year, if it’s your birthday or 11/11. All this only bring “momentum” that we can take advantage of it, but then we need to support it, to keep going, in the only way to do that is by :
- Taking responsability.
- Setting a planned strategy.
- Think about what you will do when you want to quit (it will happen, it happens to everybody).
When you make your New Year’s resolution this week, or if you have already done it, take an hour to journal about these questions (this can work with any goals):
- Are those goals SMART?
- Am I setting the end goal or the next step to achieve the end goal?
- From 1-10, how committed I am to that list?
- Do you need any help to accomplish these goals?
And my last piece of advice, it’s better to set 3 goals than 15. The third question can help you loads, to see which ones you are more committed to.
