When we think about changing careers, the first thing we think about is age. At which age is best to change jobs? When is too late to change careers? Do I have enough experience already in one field? Do I need to start from scratch if I want to change?
And the final, how long it will take me to be where I am now with my current career? I always reply with a question. Do you want to be where you are now in your career? Does it matter how long it will take to be happy?
Tatoo this in your mind, is never too late to change careers. It does not matter if you are 23,25,30,35,40,45 or 55. The best time to change careers is when you are ready, and you feel prepared to put in the work and realize that not changing will only put you in the worst place of frustration.
Because any change, at any age, will require work and sacrifices from our side. When you are more aligned with yourself, the changes will be more accessible, and everything will come “easier” to you. But any changes come with work to do and fears to overcome.
One of my favourite quotes is:
” The braver I am, the luckier I get” from Glennon Doyle.
This describes perfectly the essence of a change, once you make those first steps, everything gets easier, and you get confident that you will pull it through.
Remember that we cannot know if we do not try it if we liked it, but we cannot know about something we never tried. And that is an absolute truth. We need to try things to learn. With the help of a career change coach, you can move faster and make a more certain move.
I always talk about the trial and error of my life, personally and professionally. Start being an accountant because it was the sure-shot at that moment, followed by the travel industry because travel was my passion. All of it gave me incredible times and made me learn a ton of skills that contribute to today’s point. But none of it was who I was.
And where your profession does not align with who you are, then sooner or later, the red light inside of you will advise you. And will scream louder and louder until you listen.
Some blogs ago, I tell you about my gap year in the States, when I made my first career move; check here. I made this move because I love travelling, but I didn’t know what I was getting into until I tried. But I end up working in an international company in London and being quite good at it until I realize that I was climbing a mountain that never was mine.
And then it comes the thought; I lost all that time, and now I need to start from scratch?
Another truth, you never start from scratch, even it looks like it because your knowledge can be transferable. And when you are aligned with who you are, it is something that you know how to do it naturally and will be like riding a bike; it does not matter how long you haven’t done it; you will never forget it. Check here my last blog, “Discover your innate skills”.
Changing our career is a risk; I won’t be lying to you. Not changing it when you feel stuck is a risk as well. Because no one wants to look back and say, “I wish I did it”. It’s a much better feeling saying, “I did, and it wasn’t what I expect, and again I’ve been able to adjust my sails and take a different route”.
When you look back, the best feeling in life is to see the challenges you had, the things that haven’t gone as planned, but you overcome them, you still stand. It is the best shoot of self-esteem. And the best way to compile achievements in our list.
You don’t want to be those perfect people, that you see them struggling as f*ck, but they never made a mistake. Why? They never tried anything. They never grow. This whole existence is a mistake, but they prefer to be comfortable in that discomfort, learn to navigate their boat, and change destinations when needed.
Never is too late to try anything, as it never will be a perfect time for it either. The ideal time will be when you are ready to start the fight, when you are prepared to begin to achieve your goals, when you accept that the fear will be there because it does not exist not having it. But you decide to listen to your facts instead of your worries.
If you feel that you are in the wrong career, it is time to move. If you think you want to change, but the idea paralyzes you because of the fear of moving out of your comfort zone, then look for help because I’m sorry to break it to you. It won’t change by itself. So let’s have a free vibe call.
