Do you know your natural skills? Do you feel that you need always to make an effort at your current job to be successful? Have you thought you always have to catch up to keep the workload at the float and you are not overworked? If all this is happening to you, probably you are not using your innate natural strengths.
I see it in every client. Yet, it is so difficult for us to discover or uncover what is good in us. Our Innate Natural Skills.
We always focus on what we need to improve when we look for jobs, look at the salary or company, and fit there no matter what, which is the first mistake.
A mistake, we been taught at school since we were kids, they keep highlighting the subjects we were not very good at, they keep pushing us to be better on what is naturally hard for us. And here, we start to cover what makes us shine without even realizing it.
When I was at school, I was awful at math, but I always have been excellent at foreign languages, geography, and literature. I was born a writer, a communicator, a traveller and an adventurer.
But all these professions are not moneymakers and are not secure enough for anyone to sell it to you. So when I was six months old, I started talking so much I have to say about everything from a very early stage. I always had a diary and wrote poems. I love reading more than anything, because when you read, you can live so many different lives, going to many other places just for a bit.
But all that, I’ve learned later on. When I was 18 years old, I had no clue of what I wanted to do. All that I loved was not a moneymaker, a viable shot. So I decided to do what was secure business administration and what will land me a job ASAP.
It hasn’t gone so bad because my natural skills are that I am very organized, an expert time manager, an innate strategic thinker and a problem solver, very transferable skills.
Now, the critical question is how I discover all that?
Because I guess if you are here today, you have no idea on any of this yet. The excellent news is it took me a while as well. Bad news, trial and error because I didn’t know about career change coaches at that time. So it took me longer than I would like until I got here, where I am today.
That’s was my first motivation to become a Career Change Coach, to make women shine, make them see that it does not matter what we are not good at, and make a living of what we are good at. We do not need to fit in any job description; we need to find the job description that works who we are and what we are good at.
I will give you three coaching exercises to discover your natural talents and one piece of advice. When we are in that “stuck state of mind”, those exercises will be our compass. The first thing to do at the thought of “I don’t know what I want to do, but it is not this”.
- The Line of life: You need to start when you were a kid, maybe ten years old, and break it into periods of 5 years till today. Questions that you need to answer in each period:
- What did I like to do most?
- Any achievement in that period? (ex. gain all the writing prizes in school, honorific grades in some subject in college, etc.)
- Anything in common with the period before?
- Send a questionnaire to your family and friends: I am sure you help them with so many things that you are so easy that comes naturally. That’s why you did it all your life without noticing. Some questions you can put on this survey:
a. Which do you think I am best at?
b. What I helped you the most with?
c. Describe me with one word.
- Do an analysis professionally: I use the strength-finder test of Gallup with my clients and work wonders.
These three exercises only should help you massively to gain some clarity. And here comes my piece of advice.
Trust your gut!: Your gut will never fail you. I am sure, is something there that you get really excited about when you think about it. But maybe you think you are not good enough or it is too late. Or whatever your impostor syndrome tells you, and you believe it.
If you feel lost with your innate natural skills, it is time to take action. If you think you want to start a discovery process, and finally make sense of your career, and feel what it is to be in control of it. And not chasing it and dream about have ownership finally in the decision of career change. But the idea of doing it yourself overwhelms you, then call me!
